Design for Equality
Design for Equality is a 6 weeks course during which participants within design, technology and science are prototyping products and services aimed at a more equal workplace, domestic space or digital space.

A feminist response to new technologies
How can technology better serve women and minorities? How can we design products and services that are inclusive ?
Context
The tech industry is not representative, diverse or inclusive. It is therefore no surprise that the technologies that get built are a direct reflection from this unbalance: unrepresentative, discriminatory and non inclusive.
Despite the increasing turnover of innovations, we see there are only a low percentage of products and innovations focused at women.
So far, what has hindered the development of such products? The relatively small number of startups focusing in the female gender? Perhaps a lack of understanding of women's issues?

In this 6 weeks course we'll collaboratively imagine tech products that work towards social, economical and political equality.

During the course you will be guided through a process of storytelling, first by critically looking at what's missing, whose concerns are not being articulated, whose interests aren't being represented, and whose truths aren't being told and secondly, by using speculative tools to tell future stories of equality and inclusion.

Case study: A 3D printer for food as a critique of domestic work
#domesticwork #feminism #automation #feministtechnologies
Although the potential of automation is capable of redefining labour and revolutionising the social structure of the communities, there is still little attempt to address the work beyond employment which has been majorly undertaken by women. Beyond the unpaid labour, also outsourced domestic work has still been mainly performed by women. We believe that full-automation of housework is the only way to degender domestic labour.

Drawing on feminist theory and digital design practice, we have developed the concept of a 3D food printer sharing system where users can choose their food, order it and pick it up when it's ready. There will be multiple printers in different areas of the city, each of them owned communally by the whole neighbourhood.

An HR chatbot that makes the screening process more fair
What are the issues around the use of gender in virtual assistants in the present year? Why are digital assistants overwhelmingly female?

How do we ask people for their gender in a thoughtful and respectful way? How can we use gender neutral words?

AR camera effects that imagine a more inclusive organizational environment
How would an inclusive work environment look like?
How would an organisation's practices where women and minorities can thrive look like?

A software product that helps women be more in control of their financials
How can we design a system where women gain confidence to negotiate their salary or to ask for a raise?

Why is it important to encourage women to take more career risks - and offer them the support, confidence & role models? And how can we do that?

Do you want to support our project?
Here are several reasons Design for Equality is good for your business:
Show you're a progressive thinker
Science and gender equality have made lots of progress, so our everyday products should advance too and fit the modern world. Supporting projects that advance technology towards equality should make you feel proud for being part of this human revolution.
Be part of the solution to a global issue
Women are underrepresented in the C-suite, receive lower salaries, and are less likely to receive a critical first promotion to manager than men.
If you're aware of these issues and want to be part of the change, join our challenge.
Encourage and support education
How can we ensure that technologies produce feminist ideologies? Why is this important? If you believe that education is the key to eradicating ignorance and prejudice and want to promote education around gender equality, let's speak.
