Design for Sustainability
Design for Sustainability is a 3 weeks course during which participants within design, technology and science are prototyping products and services aimed for a degrowth-driven economy.

What is Degrowth-adapted product design?
And why Degrowth is more relevant today
more than ever?
Context: On Degrowth
The concept of degrowth dates back to the 1970s, when a group of French intellectuals led by the philosopher Andre Gorz proposed a simple idea: In response to mounting environmental and social problems, they suggested that the only real solution was to produce and consume less — to shrink our economies to cope with the carrying capacity of our planet. The proposal was considered by many at the time to be too radical. But with today's climate crisis, debates around degrowth have been reinvigorated, and many major figures such as Noam Chomsky, Yanis Varoufakis and Anthony Giddens have, to varying degrees, expressed support for the idea.
What does a definition of degrowth might sound like?
Why degrowth is an asset, and not a liability?
What is the difference between degrowth and green growth?
What does degrowth mean for businesses and technology?
During this 3-weeks course, you'll learn more about what degrowth-adapted product design means: how can we create products that have longer lifespans, are modular, or are locally produced?

How can we encourage a culture of maintenance, repair and co-usership? How is community more powerful than material consumption when it comes to improve people's sense of happiness?

How can we create living conditions based on qualitative maintenance and restauration, instead of continuous production for economic growth and raising consumption?

  • Maria Agra Bermejo
    Product designer
"I had always wanted to practice speculative design, so I couldn't wait to sign up for the 'Design for post-capitalism' workshop. The theory sessions covered both the topic in the title and lean product methodology in a very approachable way. Having Andra's support and coaching while working on your individual project is the best part, not only is she very knowledgeable about product design, but also has lots of experience and has helped me tailor the project to my profile, as I'm a product designer. I'm very happy with the outcome of the workshop and looking forward to seeing the project come to life."
  • Alex Drăgan
    Senior Network Developer
"Andra was a very good coach, she answered all my questions, she recommended me a list of books to read and she helped me with everything I needed. I warmly recommend to anyone who has a business idea or wants to start entrepreneurship. I strongly believe that nowadays if you start working on an idea that is not validated, you have very little chances of success, and Andra can help you avoid those mistakes that the vast majority make"
